Illumination Fundamental Art (Ifá)

Illumination Fundamental Art (Ifá)

Ifá philosophy

Illumination Fundamental Art (Ifá) is the word of Olodumare encompassing all knowledge of things past, present and future. Ifá philosophy is one of the oldest  form of knowledge revealed to mankind. Hence tthe body of knowledge called Ifá  is endless, ageless and eternal. Click here to buy Practitioner's Handbook for the IFA Professional

The expression of Ifá encompasses revelations, way of life and religion taught by òrùnmìlà . That is why it is said that Orunmila is the divinity but Ifá is his words The  Ifá priest  is the mouth piece of  Orunmila. Knowledge of Ifá  has mainly survived by oral tradition from one Ifá priest to another. No conscious effort has ever been made to record the complete works of Orunmila for public consumption until resent.

The Ifá priests themselves are often reluctant to part with their knowledge for fear of the knowledge becomes pubic property and the mythical facade behind which they operates be destroyed because it takes over 21 years of indentured servitude to produce a proficient  Ifá priest. The revelations of Orunmila (Ifá) have since beginning of time been shrouded in utter secrecy and those who could afford the time and leisure of acquiring the knowledge of Ifá and wisdom of  Orunmila had no means of leaving any record behind them.

Whatever we know of Ifá had been handed down orally from generation to generation. Most of what is know about Ifá today are revealed by himself because frequently appears to his adherents in dreams to  teach them what they ought know about him and his work (Ifá).  Buy Iwa-Pele: Ifa Quest: The Search for the Source of Santeria and Lucumi

The knowledge of Ifá has given òrùnmìlà such unparalleled powers that made him the most effective of all divinities that were the first  creatures of God. Orunmila who was the youngest of all divinities created by God; was actually God's own witness when he began to create other organic and inorganic substances ; That is why  Orunmila is referred to as Eleri ipin. He alone knows the true nature and origin of all creatures created by God.  Get a copy of Ifa Divination: Communication Between Gods and Men in West Africa (Midland Book)

The followers of òrùnmìlà who are able to acquire some of the knowledge therefore weld tremendous powers which have often baffled many uninitiated into calling it magic or juju. The  Ifá priest  is the mouth piece of  Orunmila he is the axis around which daily life revolved in the community. Until relatively recently it was respectable to consult the Ifá priest openly to seek solutions to the problems of living but in recent times; it has become fashionable to consults in absolute secrecy and stealth.

The factors responsible for this secrecy attitude are as these:
  • The advent of modern civilization and education it brought in it wake.
  • The overbearing influence of later-day religions which were used by the imperialists as weapon of conquest of both moral minds, territorial ambitions and lately economy dominant.
  • The last is the is the aggregate impacts of the two forces.
The children of ifa priest no longer wish to be associated with religion and wisdom of ifa their forefathers which they dismiss as barbaric superstitious paganism.
It is important to appreciate that òrùnmìlà does not go about looking for converts . Ifa religion is for the individual, which does not rely on weight of numbers for survival. Ifa philosophy is designed to assist the students and initiates in acquiring more in-dept knowledge of Ifa wisdom and to demystify the philosophy of Ifa religion. Contrary to all outward appearances there is nothing mysterious and superstitious about Ifa.

More importantly is to make Ifa religion rank Parnassus if not superior to much younger religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism etc .These other religions had the advantage of earlier documentations.

Many Ifa priests endowed with brilliant knowledge of the theory and practice of Ifa wisdom left no records of their wealth of knowledge and experience hence Ifa is a much richer and older body of knowledge.  Tratado De Los ODU De IFA Sintesis Tercera Edicion Espcial (Spanish Edition)

Ifa's wisdom

In this age, with the many global concerns and personal obstacles, there is a tendency to feel trapped, helpless and victimized by unknowable forces, the wisdom of Ifa show how anyone, at any time, may claim freedom and peace in a spiritual universe. It is great to see that Ifa's wisdom is being shared in a way that is tangible and used in very practical terms. Too often African Spirituality is regulated to spells and potions. Ifa shows us that it's wisdom can stand firmly in our modern culture and support those who are looking to transform their lives. Reflections on the Wisdom of Ifa as they relate to human conditions and experiences in life provides a different approach, perspective, and understanding to Ifa tradition--quite different from the narrowed view on ebos alone.

Òrùnmìlà is the orisha of wisdom and knowledge, who created the system and method for accessing the knowledge of Ifa which Is the word of Olodumare encompassing all knowledge of things past, present and future. Ifá refers to the system of divination and the verses of the literary corpus known as the Odú Ifá. Songs from  this album Orunmila's Dance are available to purchase as MP3s

Basic primer for those seeking understanding to the traditional belief of the Yoruba, Ifa. Introduction to the Orisa. This book, Ijo Orunmila by Babalawo Fasina Falade, is such a blessing and treasure. I highly recommend it for not only us (Ifa devotees) seeking knowledge and truth, but those interested in a traditional African belief system. I whole-heartily appreciate the way that Baba Fasina has taken time out to explain in detail everyday terms that we use, but probably never knew or understood the true meaning of, such as: Olorun, Iwa, Otito, and Suuru, just to name a few. What's good about this book, besides the sections on Oriki, the Odu's, Libation, etc., which we use in daily worship, are how he correlates it all together as the beautiful and spiritual tradition we know as Ifa. Each section is insightful and in my honest opinion, dispells any mis-conception on how our tradition is perceived or practiced. Baba, adupe pupo (thank you very much) for hearing the call and answering it by writing such a wonderful and inspirational oracle. One would do themselves an injustice NOT to have Ijo Orunmila in their collection. Click Here to get you copy of Ijo Orunmila

Olofín, Oddúa, Inle, Orúnmila, Iroko - Afro Cuban Traditions by Lázaro Ros Y Grupo Olorún
This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply. When I visited Havana in 2002, I was very fortunate not only to meet the great cantor of La Regla de Ocha (aka Santeria) praise-hymns, Lazaro Ros, but also to participate in an initiation ceremony for which he was the lead singer. Unfortunately, he died not long after. He was a marvelous human being. I knew when I ordered this cd that his performance would be great, but I wasn't sure what the quality of the recording might be like. Both are superior. Whenever I play his songs to the Orishas (gods & goddesses or saints), he seems to live again. I strongly encourage you to purchase and play this album. The African Traditional Religion

This landmark study of Ifa, the most important and elaborate system of divination of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, remains a monumental contribution to scholarship in anthropology, folklore, religion, philosophy, linguistics, and African and African-American studies. Yoruba religion has a direct link to a substantial segment of American society for . . . ``the greatest percentage of Africans enslaved for the New World labor came from the Yoruba nation'' of Nigeria, West Africa.
Karade traces the concepts of the Yoruba religion through its entrance into the Americas via Haiti, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Cuba. Variations such as Santeria and Voodoo have accumulated some negative connotations, but Karade maintains persuasively that ``Yoruba religion is not a cult nor is it `occult,' but rather a divine journey to the inner self and to God-consciousness.''
Readers of this straightforward text will find familiar concepts such as angels and even an elevated stature comparable to that of the ``son of God'' in the person of Orunmila, the prophet of Yoruba religion. Further, the text compares Yoruba religious concepts to those of other religions in order to make understanding the tradition even easier. Prayers and rituals (e.g., herbal baths, etc.) complete this interesting handbook. Illustrated.

In this introductory volume, Baba Ifa Karade provides an easily understandable overview of the Yoruba religion. He describes 16 orisha and shows us how to work with divination, to use the chakras to internalize the teachings of Yoruba, and describes howto create a sacred place of worship. Includes prayers, dances, songs, offerings, and sacrifices to honor the orisha and egun. Illustrations, charts, glossary, bibliography, and index. The sacred texts of Ifa, repository of the accumulated wisdom of countless generations of Yoruba people, are an invaluable source not only for all students of African oral literature and Yoruba civilization, but also for future generations interested in the continuing vitality of Ifa divination and a Yoruba way of life and thought.
This landmark study of Ifa, the most important and elaborate system of divination of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, remains a monumental contribution to scholarship in anthropology, folklore, religion, philosophy, linguistics, and African and African-American studies.

This book is a wonderful insight to the Yoruba religion and culture for students and practitioners alike. IFA Divination is a must have to any avid collector, practitioner, or student of African Religion, Yoruba culture or Ifa practice in the Western world.
